BEING AN ADVISOR

Being a DECA Chapter Advisor is a great way to get involved in your school community and interact with students outside the classroom.  As an advisor, you will represent your chapter at advisor meetings, accompany students to conferences and competitions, and facilitate training or other chapter-based initiatives.  While teachers are often weary of students’ behaviour on field trips, you will be pleasantly surprised at the behaviour of DECA members at DECA events.  Their maturity and professionalism will startle you; their attention to detail and ability to follow instructions will astound you; and most of all, their spirit and enthusiasm for DECA will make you proud!

The role of advisor is as involved as you make it.  Most of the work should be led by your chapter’s student executive team who then coordinate events with the help of your general members. The idea is to advise – not manage – the activities of the chapter.  If you want to do more, network with other advisors and share ideas for fund raising, training, spirit boosting, etc.  Best of all, DECA Ontario will provide you with all the training material your chapter needs and you are welcome and encouraged to use the material in your classes!
