FAQ – Advisors

What does DECA stand for?

DECA stood for Distributive Education Clubs of America.  Today, we refer to ourselves as simply ’DECA’.

What are the various costs for the year?

The basic cost structure per member is $35 for membership and Regional Competition, and $35 for Provincial Competition.  The cost of all other conferences and competitions including ICDC vary based on the location each year.  Specific information about those events will be emailed to advisors and posted on the website under Conferences and Competitions as it becomes available.

Why do chapters collect different amounts of money from students?

The amount of money and when that money is collected is up to the individual chapters in so far as DECA Ontario collection dates are adhered to.  While some chapters collect all membership and competition fees plus some more money for chapter incidentals early in the school year, others collect only what needs to be paid when it needs to be paid.

How many members do I need to form a chapter?  Is there a maximum number of students per chapter?

Chapters are based on a membership of at least 10 students.  There is no maximum membership per chapter; the more the merrier!  It is recommended that chapters with over 30 members have at least 2 advisors to make facilitating the chapter less cumbersome.

What are my responsibilities at competitions?

First and foremost, you are responsible for being physically present and contactable by phone at all competitions while your students are in attendance; this includes lunch breaks and overnight if your students are staying at the Sheridan Hotel.  Specific roles and duties are assigned to each advisor at the Provincial Competition to help run the events.  Details will be emailed as they are established.  Finally, you are responsible for representing your chapter at advisor meetings and communicating information relevant to your chapter to ensure efficient operation of events and to maximize opportunities for your chapter.

What if I can’t attend a competition?

You are responsible for arranging for another teacher to supervise your chapter at the event.  This could be a teacher from your school, or a willing advisor from another school.  Contact information for the appointed supervisor must be provided to DECA Ontario and students, parents, and your school must be informed of this situation.  In the case that arrangements cannot be made, the chapter cannot attend the event.

Where can I get more training materials for my chapter?

DECA Ontario equips all chapters with an up-to-date CD of resources including cases, tests, and exemplars for all pre-existing events at the Fall Symposium.  In addition to these resources, DECA specific textbooks, videos, and more can be purchased from the DECA Images online store.  To purchase the Virtual Business Challenge software used at DECA Ontario events, visit Knowledge Matters.
