FAQ – Students

What does DECA stand for?
DECA originally stood for Distributive Education Clubs of America.  Today, we no longer use the phrase and we simply refer to ourselves as ‘DECA’.

How do I become a DECA member?
You can become a member of DECA Ontario by joining the DECA chapter at your school.  If you do not have a DECA chapter, start one!  All you need is 10 interested students and a teacher advisor to help you along the way!  Finally, have your teacher advisor contact DECA Ontario to register your school’s chapter and stay informed of DECA events.  While new chapter registration is accepted until October 16th, you can add new members to your chapter up until November 30th.

Why do chapters collect different amounts of money from students?
The amount of money and when that money is collected is up to the individual chapters in so far as DECA Ontario collection dates are adhered to.  While some chapters collect all membership and competition fees plus some more money for chapter incidentals early in the school year, others collect only what needs to be paid when it needs to be paid.

If I didn’t qualify in my category at the Regionals, can I still compete at the Provincials?
Yes you can!  Events that do not require Regional qualification include: University of Waterloo event, University of Guelph event and all written category events.  If you would like to attend but not compete, try the Leadership Development Experience!  Please see Competitive Events for details and requirements for these events.

If I didn’t compete at the Regionals, can I still compete at the Provincials?
Please see answer above.

If I change my mind, or cannot attend a competition, will I get a refund?
Membership Dues,  Provincial Competition and Internationals fees are non-refundable.  If you have paid to attend ICDC but can no longer attend please contact DECA Ontario to discuss your options.

Where can I get more training materials for my chapter?
DECA Ontario equips all chapters with an up-to-date CD of resources including cases, tests, and exemplars for all pre-existing events at the Fall Symposium.  In addition to these resources, DECA specific textbooks, videos, and more can be purchased from the DECA Images online store.  To purchase the Virtual Business Challenge software used at DECA Ontario events, visit Knowledge Matters.

How can I stay involved in DECA after high school?
There are many ways to stay involved with DECA once you graduate.  Consider joining DECA U at your university.  You could also sign up to be a judge at one of our competitions.  Better yet, if you’re in the workforce, become a sponsor and increase the opportunities for existing DECA members!
