FAQ – Provincials
When and where is the Provincial Competition?
The 2009-2010 Provincial Competition will be held at the Toronto Sheraton Centre on February 8-9, 2010.
Who can attend the Provincial Competition?
There are several ways to participate in the Provincials: qualify at the Regionals to compete in your event category, enter into one of many written event categories, or be selected to attend one of the leadership programs. All students must be accompanied by at least one teacher advisor who will be specifically responsible for those students for the duration of the competition.
How much will the Provincial Competition cost?
The cost of the Provincial Competition starts at $35 for registration. Additional costs are incurred if students wish to stay overnight at the Sheraton Centre (cost varies per year; see Provincial Registration Package for exact rates this year) and if they choose to purchase meals in the area.
Do I have to stay overnight at the Sheraton Centre?
If your chapter is planning to stay overnight in a hotel for the competition, they must stay at the Toronto Sheraton Centre to help subsidize the cost of occupying all ballrooms. However, if your chapter plans to go home and return again for the second day of events, staying overnight is not mandatory. Students cannot stay overnight at any downtown hotel property other than the Sheraton and under the direct supervision of their advisor.
If my teammate can’t come to the Provincials, can I change my category to compete as an individual?
If you have already registered to attend the Provincials as a team, a category change will not be granted. You may still compete in your category, but being alone may put you at a disadvantage. However, if you have not yet registered for the Provincials, you can choose to compete in one of DECA Ontario’s special event categories, or one of the written events as an individual competitor.
When and where do I submit my written report?
Written submissions are due on January 15th, no later than 4pm. Three copies must be submitted; one via email to www.turnitin.com, and the other two hard copies via mail/courier/personal delivery to the DECA Ontario office.

What can be done to prepare for the competition?
Archives of past tests, event topics, and role plays have been provided to your advisor for practice and training for all competitions. These should be used for your self-initiated training. Practice role plays with a peer, teacher, parent/guardian, or sibling. Do tests from previous years to familiarize yourself with the style and types of questions asked in your category. Challenge yourself by doing tests from similar categories i.e. Financial Services and Accounting. Have teachers and parents/guardian review and edit your written work. Present in front of a mirror!
